Da più di trent’anni il
clarinettista e sassofonista Luca Velotti ha conosciuto molteplici occasioni di
mostrare il suo talento, sia come virtuoso di ‘mainstream’ su palchi di tutto
il mondo a fianco di nomi quali Scott
Hamilton, Bob Wilber e Kenny Davern, sia come collaboratore
stabile dell'orchestra di Paolo Conte.
Velotti, che da giovanissimo si è innamorato del ‘traditional’, ha sempre
proposto la sua personale visione del linguaggio classico, senza mai essere una 'copia di niente'. In questo nuovo disco, in cui si
alterna tra clarinetto, tenore e soprano, Velotti si fa sostenere dalle armonie
chitarristiche di Michele Ariodante
(che è anche cantante in tre brani) e da Gerardo
Bartoccini al basso e Carlo Battisti
alla batteria per sviluppare su otto standard e tre originali le sue
esplorazioni melodiche. La lista dei brani spazia dal repertorio più
tradizionale (Jitterbug waltz, I’m in the
mood for love, Shine) a standard meno conosciuti (Moonray, I’ll be seeing you) fino a canzoni bluesistiche (Gee baby ain’t I good to you, Nobody knows
you when you’re down and out). Oltre a ciò, l’amore di Velotti per generi
sudamericani quali choro e habanera è rappresentato da Migalhas de amor (del mandolinista brasiliano Jacob do Bandolim), Anita e So cool, due dei tre originali presenti (il terzo, Sidney and Louis , è uno swing lento
dedicato a due dei suoi eroi). Con questo cd Luca Velotti è riuscito ad
intraprendere un ideale viaggio musicale in cui i colori di jazz, blues,
ballads e musica del Sud America si fondono in un risultato unico e multicolore.
The talent of clarinet/sax player Luca Velotti has been widely recognized
in the last thirty years, both as mainstream jazz virtuoso performing on
international stages (side by side with names such as Scott Hamilton, Bob Wilber
and Kenny Davern among many others)
and stable sideman with Italian songwriter Paolo
Conte. Velotti, who felt in love with the tradition of jazz during his
teens, has always proposed his personal view of the classic language, carefully
avoiding any sterile imitation. On this new record, where he alternates between
clarinet, tenor sax and soprano sax, he is relying on the guitar colors of Michele Ariodante (who also sings on
three tracks) and the rhythmic foundation of Gerardo Bartoccini on bass and Carlo
Battisti on drums to support his melodic explorations of eight standards
and three originals. Within the song
list we find a wide variety of influences, from the more traditional repertoire
(Jitterbug waltz, I’m in the mood for
love, Shine) to seldom played standards (Moonray
by clarinetist Artie Shaw, I’ll be seeing
you) and blues songs (Gee baby ain’t I good to you, Nobody knows you when you’re down and out).
Beyond that, Velotti’s love for South American musical genres, such as choro and
habanera, is represented by Migalhas de
amor, (by Brazilian mandolin player Jacob du Bandolim), Anita and So cool, two of the three Velotti’s originals on the record (the
third, Sidney and Louis is a slow
swing dedicated to two of his heroes). With this cd, Luca
Velotti has succeded in crafting a musical journey where the colors and the
flavors of jazz, blues, ballads and South American music, blend in a polychrome
and unique result.
